Placement!

Recently, I have managed to obtain a work placement at a PR consultancy and this has been really fantastic! It is with Green Communications in Wakefield, which consists of a relatively small group of people but is an extremely good company.

I have to admit, I was not really sure what would be expected of me on my first day of a placement, which incedently will only be one day a week. Would I be the "tea girl" or would I be involved in any PR work? Would I be able to give opinions or would I even get to see any client work? Luckily for me, Green were more than helpful and generous in the variety of tasks they set me. I did get to be involved and, throught research, I got to learn a great deal about a junior PR practitioner's role. I sent most of the morning looking for statistics and information as well as getting in contact with the national newspapers. I also got the oppertunityto do a draft for a press release, which was so useful for me to get to grips with what I was writing.

I truely enjoyed the experience and am desperatley excited to go back tomorrow! By spending time in a consultancy, I am even more sure that this is the path I want to follow.

I have, also, managed to get in touch with another company about a short term placement in January so that I can get another perpective of the world of PR. I am very excited about this, as it is a large company so I will be able to see two very different atmospheres I hope!! I think the more experience I can gain the better and, as I said, I am enjoying it so much.

Reality TV...Have we had enough?

As ITV is gearing up for yet another "I'm a celebrity get me out of here!" I can't help but think, should we just give it a rest now? Or are these programmes as popular as ever?

I must make it clear that I am not talking about talent shows such as "Pop Idol", "The X factor" or any others of this nature. I am simply looking at the ones where there is constant filming like "Big Brother" and "I'm a celebrity...".

To be, sadly, honest, I was a big fan of the early reality TV shows and I got hooked. It was something new and exciting. The people who went on the shows had no idea what the reaction was of the general publc and therefore they did not act up to it. The early Big Brother series', I found fascinating! Now, I do feel a little as if the housemates are acting up to popular characters of the past. This maybe a very cynical view but I think it would be more interesting to see people being themselves.

Again, when the celebrity versions of the reality TV shows began, excitement filled people. The thought of old neighbours stars combined with members of, now defunked, bands slumming it in the jungle sounded too good to be true. I just can't help but thinking, with yet another one on the horizon, have we seen it all? Yes, I understand that we do all love to watch those, who usually dine at places such as Nobu, get stuck into a kangeroo ball or two, but is that all we tune in for?

After the, well documented, disaster of Channel 4's "Celebrity Big Brother" episode with Shilpa Shetty, Danielle Lloyd and Jade Goody, you can't help but think: "What would inspire you to go on something like this?" Then I remember the reality TV "stars" who have been "born" from "Big Borther" such as Chantelle Houghton, Nikki Grahame and Kate Lawler. There are also stars who have rebranded themselves from "I'm a celebrity..." such as Myleene Class and Katie Price. Watching the careers of these ladies rocket, must be temping.

Personally, I think that this new series of "I'm a celebrity..." will have to provide something more to keep the audience entertained. We have become used to seeing people doing the strangest of things and we want to still be shocked and excited.

Has the reality TV thing gone too far? In it's current state, I believe the answer is yes.

Starting the blog...

How to start your very first blog?!

I have to admit, I have only just grasped the concepts of blogs so I will give it my best shot!

I am going to start by giving you a bit of background detail about who I actually am. My name is Nikki Peters, a student at Leeds Metropolitan University and I am, as the title of my blog suggests, studying PR. I am from a tiny little place called Elsenham which is on the Herts and Essex border, North East of London.

I decided to take a gap year before the 4 year commitment of uni. During this time I worked and then travelled. It was the best experience I could of ever hoped for! I went to Hong-Kong, Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, Laos, Singapore, Australia, New Zealand and Fiji. I would have to say that after this huge adventure, travelling is one of my biggest passions.

So this brings us to now. I have been at Leeds Met for about 7 weeks now and I am really enjoying it. The World of PR is becoming clearer to me and I am undertaking the challange of tying to find a placement!

During this blog I am going to hopefully give you my views on any films, music or news stories which catch my attention. I hope you enjoy!

So I guess for now its a case of "watch this space..."

Yours,
PR student Leeds Met
